Areté (Greek: ἀρετή; pronounced:  /ærəte/  in English)

In its basic sense, areté means “goodness”, “excellence” or “virtue” of any kind. In its earliest appearance in Greek this notion of excellence was bound up with the notion of the fulfilment of purpose or function; the act of living up to one’s full potential…

You are invited to become a member of the Areté Club. Areté Club brings together the different worlds of security, politics, business, and the arts. It is open to members of all ages and varies from CEOs, think tank directors, MPs, through to young professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, military staff, and top graduate students. Its purpose is to link talented and influential people together, and get them talking about the big issues of our times.

It brings a diverse collection of similarly curious minds together, the captains of industry from today and tomorrow, not only for earnest, civilised debate, but also for the expansion of personal and professional networks. Prestigious speakers will invigorate the discussion, but it is through members that the club will flourish.

The Socratic axiom “virtue is knowledge” becomes “Areté is knowledge”; the highest human potential is knowledge and all other human abilities are derived from this central capacity for thought, reflection and imagination.

In the ancient Homeric world, a person of areté would use their faculties to triumph with bravery, strength and wit. Today, Areté Club invites members to grapple with the testing questions and controversies of our times. Members are drawn from varied professions and experience. The rising stars will sit with the accomplished; the private and public spheres mingle. Away from the madding crowd in intimate and elegant settings, the club enables members to seek areté.

The usual format of Areté Club dinner events is a drinks reception, followed by a three-course meal. The Director opens the session and introduces the Chair. After starters, the first speaker begins. The second speaker talks after the main course. Discussion follows after dessert, over coffee. The events are held under Areté Club Rules.

Areté Club also hosts film screenings, and connects early ventures/ideas/projects and people with potential investors and partners for valuable introductions.
