Raison d’etre

Areté (Greek: ἀρετή; pronounced: /ˈærəteɪ/ in English) In its basic sense, areté means “goodness”, “excellence” or “virtue” of any kind. In its earliest appearance in Greek this notion of excellence was bound up with the notion of the fulfilment of purpose or function;the act of living up to one’s full potential.

The Socratic axiom “virtue is knowledge” becomes “Areté is knowledge”; the highest human potential is knowledge and all other human abilities are derived from this central capacity for thought, reflection and imagination.

You are invited to become a member of the Areté Club. The ethos behind the club is simple: it is a forum for those with a broad intellectual horizon who enjoy debating, wining and dining. It brings a diverse collection of similarly curious minds together, the captains of industry from today and tomorrow, not only for earnest, civilised debate, but also for the expansion of personal and professional networks. Prestigious speakers will invigorate the discussion, but it is through members that the club will flourish.

Areté Club invites members to grapple with the testing questions and controversies of our times. Members are drawn from varied professions and experiences – from the worlds of politics, security, business, development and the arts. Areté Club is about spreading ideas across industries, across generations, and between leaders.

The format of Areté Club dinners is a drinks reception, followed by a three-course meal. The Director opens the session and introduces the chair. After starters, the first speaker begins. The second speaker talks after the main course. Discussion follows after dessert, over coffee. Arrival will be at 7pm for dinner at 7.30pm prompt.

The Club connects early ventures, ideas, projects, and people with potential partners and investors.
